What You Can Do to Lessen the Effects of Infant Acid Reflux

Infant acid reflux is usually more devastating to the parents than it is to the child suffering with the condition. Sure, they will spit up a lot and cry, but they won’t remember any of that. You on the other hand will never forget the frustration and despair you experienced when your baby was suffering with infant acid reflux.
There are some things you can do to help lessen the effects and manage the symptoms of infant acid reflux. The best thing you can do is have patience and know that the condition will not last forever and it will not harm your child in any lasting way.
Your baby should begin to outgrow infant acid reflux at about six months of age. It is thought that because the baby is spending more time sitting upright rather than lying down, and this is said that in itself, will help prevent spit ups. After you have fed your baby, you can try keeping her in an upright position and quiet. Once the baby has finished her bottle and burped, sit her in your lap with her head nestled on your chest. Stay this way for at least thirty minutes after she has finished eating.
Another step you can take to reduce the symptoms of infant acid reflux is to offer smaller meals more frequently. When your baby suffers with infant acid reflux, you should feed the child twice as often and feed only half as much. Your baby will be able to digest smaller amounts of formula quicker, thus eliminating extra acid production.
A great way to avoid the more severe symptoms of infant acid reflux is to breast feed your baby and be careful of the food you are eating as it can pass into the milk that feeds your baby. Continue breast feeding as long as it is feasible to you, as feeding a baby with infant acid reflux formula can only worsen the symptoms. Breast milk contains digestion aiding enzymes that can minimize the effects of infant acid reflux.

Treating Infant Constipation Gently and Safely

In this article we will look at infant constipation treatment and how best to deal with constipation when an infant is suffering from it.
The best way in which any parent could treat an infant who is suffering from constipation is by changing the child’s diet. The constipation will not improve without a change of diet and they will also probably be using stool softeners as well.
The goal of any infant constipation treatment is so that the child has 1 or 2 soft stools each day. So why not give them 2 to 4 ounces of water or diluted fruit juice once or twice a day. Or you may want to swap the formula they are drinking at the moment for a soy formula instead.
If however your infant is older than 4 months and suffering from constipation then you may want to try feeding them lots of fiber which are contained in cereals, strained prunes, apricots or spinach.
A great way of helping an infant suffering from constipation is by massaging their stomach. Begin at the belly button and then massage outwards in circles in a clockwise direction. Put some baby oil or cream on your fingers as this will help with the massage. However if your child becomes upset or uncomfortable with the massage then stop it.
Or you try moving your infant’s legs in a cycling motion whilst they are laid on their backs. Just hold their legs and then gently move them in a quick cycling motion. This will cause the stomach muscles to move and this in turn will put gentle pressure on the infant’s intestines and make them move.
Another great way of helping an infant suffering from constipation is to give them a warm bath which will help them to relax and thus their stools will be passed more easily. After the bath and when your infant is more relaxed you could try massaging their stomach again. Also after a bath apply some cream or Vaseline to the area around the infant’s anus. It is important that you do not put a thermometer or anything inside your infant’s anus to stimulate bowel movement as this will only cause damage to your child.
There are a number of different ways as shown above which can be used for infant constipation treatment and as long as you watch what they eat and ensure that they have plenty of fluids they should not suffer with this problem too much.

Infant Ear Infection And The Effects On Your Child

Infant ear infection is one of the most common reasons children are taken to see the doctor and is especially common in infants up to two years of age. The problem with babies and infants is establishing ear infection as the cause of discomfort because unlike older children who will tell you their ear is aching, toddlers cannot and parents need to be aware of other tell tale signs.
Infant Ear Infections - Pain Is The Biggest Clue
Ear aches can come on very quickly and the accompanying symptoms will be pain and usually fever. Pain is obviously the biggest giveaway in toddler ear infections because make no mistake, they hurt!
This is one of the reasons if a child continually pulls on it's ear but appears to be in no discomfort at all that ear infection is usually ruled out. There could be a host of other reasons why the child is tugging it's ear such as teething, curiosity by the child, itching and yes, even habitual. A little like sucking the thumb. But what does an adult with their first child and no relative experience in this area do? The most obvious course of action is to head to the doctor.
Ear Infection Fact
There are several risk factors for infant ear infection. Some of the more common include colds, flus and allergies which may be picked up by a child during daycare and pre school facilities which can then lead to ear infection developing, recurrent infection and changes in climate.
Detecting Toddler And Baby Ear Infections
Children's eustachian tubes, the connection between the middle ear and the nose, are a lot shorter than those of adults. In fact, in babies, the Eustachian tube is at least one third the length of an adults so fluid drainage can become a problem.
Following a bout of cold and flu or allergy attack, babies can become more susceptible to developing an ear infection. The Eustachian tube can become blocked which leads to fluid gathering in the middle ear and not being released. Bacteria then breeds and if unchecked, swelling and pain, followed by fever, is usually the result.
If your baby suddenly displays a change in attitude such as becoming irritable and unco-operative, crys and screams often in short bursts then something is usually wrong and ear infection is usually one of the suspects. While there may be other reasons the child may be aggravated a visit to your doctor should be your first priority as they can quickly determine if there is infection present in the ear.
Although infant ear infections are common, they can be serious and without any diagnosis or treatment, ruptures to the eardrum are possible while in more serious cases, possible loss of hearing could be the result.
Treatment Of Infant Ear Infection
Over half of infant ear infection episodes may improve without treatment. There is a theory that waiting three to four days once a diagnosis has been made could be the best course of action initially but if the symptoms haven't improved, then treatment intervention is usually pursued.
Debate continues on whether antibiotic treatment is the best course of action although with very young children, doctors will usually play it safe and prescribe them. Associated pain relieving medication may also be suggested to accompany the antibiotic treatment.

Childrens Bedding - A Guide To Choosing Infant Bedding

An approaching birth is an exciting time, and whether you’re the expecting parents or friends or family of those expecting, the selection of infant bedding for the newborn’s crib is often not given much thought during the process of shopping for the baby or the baby shower. While it is certainly a minor detail when compared to researching the enormous market of car seats, highchairs, and other safety products, it still should be given more than passing consideration since baby will be spending much of his or her time sleeping there.
Crib mattress size
Safety standards implemented in the 1970s mandate that cribs mattress sizes be standardized, measuring 27.25” x 51.625” and being no more than six inches high. All new infant bedding is designed to conform to these standards.
So really, the only instance when the size or fit of infant bedding may become an issue is if the expecting parents plan to use an antique or heirloom crib. If this is the case, you should ensure that the crib still meets these safety guidelines, especially with regard to the crib’s slats or spindles, and you’ll probably want to consider using a flat sheet rather than the fitted crib sheets which will either be too large or too small on non-standard crib mattresses.
Children’s Bedding Material or Fabric
While crib bedding sizes are standard (28” x 52”), the material or fabric of the bedding still can vary between manufacturers or even individual bedding designs by the same manufacturer. You’ll find that most infant bedding on the market will have either a 100% cotton construction or else a blend of cotton and polyester.
If allergies or chemical sensitivity is a concern, it would certainly be best to go with a natural fabric. (Cotton is always a safe and readily available option, though wool may also be an option). Its best to check with the manufacturer regarding the composition of their infant bedding fabrics, particularly with designer brands or specialty designs, where more elaborate synthetics may appear.
Children’s Bedding Patterns
When shopping for children’s bedding, most people’s primary concern of course is the pattern or design of the beddings. The proprietary designs that proliferate the children’s bedding market are not quite as widespread within the infant bedding niche of the market. Typically, you will find more generic or non-branded designs with infant bedding.
What many people don’t consider is that infant bedding can be used as a readily available multi-sensory learning tool. An emerging body of research on infant learning processes points towards the benefits of multi-sensory approaches to infant learning and early childhood education. This approach to teaching increases memory retention by creating more sensory associations with the subject matter.
As an example, let’s look at the “Engine #9” infant bedding design by Kimberly Grant. This quilt-style comforter has many fun colors for baby to look at, yet it’s put together in a way that doesn’t overwhelm the eye. Similarly, it is made of multiple kinds of fabrics--blue corduroy, yellow seersucker, tan check, red woven plaid, and ivory chenille--so baby can discover all these different textures and feelings and colors right in his own crib. And the simple, whimsical objects depicted on it--the fire truck, Dalmatian, and fire hydrant--provide additional opportunities to teach baby new words while he can see and touch them on his own comforter.
So for expecting parents who are hip to the emerging research and implementations of multi-sensory teaching, infant bedding with quilted designs can provide a readily available and often overlooked tool to implement in a larger multi-sensory approach. And for parents who haven’t heard much about multi-sensory learning, perhaps getting quilted infant bedding may motivate you to learn more about it!

Causes of Baby Diaper Rash and When to Seek Medical Advice

Diaper rash usually looks like a patchwork of bright red skin on your baby’s bottom. Most babies develop a diaper rash sometime or another. Times diaper rash may appear most often are:
• After solid foods are added to your baby’s diet• When your baby is taking antibiotics• When diapers are changed infrequently
Diaper rashes are more common in babies during their first 15 months or anytime your baby wears diapers. Other factors that contribute to diaper rash may include:
• Diarrhea• Use of plastic pants to cover a diaper
The good news about most diaper rashes is most cases disappear after a few days with home treatment.
Signs and symptoms of diaper rash include:
• Red, puffy and sometimes slightly warmer skin in the diaper region, buttocks, thighs and genitals• Baby may seem more uncomfortable than usual especially during diaper changes• Pain from a diaper rash often makes a baby fuss or cry when the diaper area is washed or touched
Causes for diaper rash
If a baby is forced to wear diapers soiled with urine or feces for long periods of time, he or she can experience irritation. A baby’s skin is usually quite sensitive, but even an adult who would wear an undergarment soiled with urine or feces for long periods of time would eventually experience irritation.
Sometimes when babies start to eat solid foods, the content of their stool changes and can increase the likelihood of diaper rash. Changes in baby’s diet can lead to increased frequency of stools, which can cause diaper rash. Breast-fed babies may develop diaper rash in response to something you have eaten.
New products such as a new brand of disposable wipes, diaper or detergent can irritate baby’s bottom. Even the type of detergent or fabric softener you use could be the cause.
Other substances that can add to the problem of diaper rash include ingredients found in:
• Baby lotions• Baby powders• Baby oils
The diaper rash can begin as a simple skin infection then spread to the surrounding regions within the creases of the skin turning into a bacterial or yeast infection.
Be careful about the fit of diapers and clothing. Tight fitting diapers and clothing which rubs against the skin can lead to diaper rash.
If your baby’s diaper rash does not improve within several days of home treatment and more frequent diaper changes, ask your health care provider for advice. If the diaper rash leads to a secondary infection it may require prescription medications. If diaper rash occurs with any of the following, have your child examined by a health care provider:
• Fever• Blisters or boils• A rash that extends beyond the diaper area• Pus or weeping discharge• Rashes that don’t respond to home treatment

Caring For Your Baby's Umbilical Cord

From the sixth week of pregnancy until birth there is an umbilical cord that connects the developing fetus to the mother through the placenta. It exists as a lifeline that supplies the developing fetus with oxygen, nutrition and a route for waste elimination while the fetus is within the womb.
At birth, the baby is able to breathe, eat, and void by itself. The umbilical cord is no longer necessary and is clamped and cut shortly after delivery.
The remaining cord after baby’s birth requires proper care to heal and drop off naturally. This occurs usually within 2 weeks after birth.
There are two conditions that will require prompt medical care. These are:
• Umbilical granuloma: This is a persistent, yellow-green drainage from the belly button, no redness, warmth, swelling or tenderness of the surrounding skin is present. Fever will not usually be present. A small nodule of firm, pinkish-red tissue represents an umbilical granuloma. This condition can be treated successfully in the doctor’s office.• Patent urachus: Top of baby’s diaper continuously wet, or fluid leaking from the belly button could represent a “rare” condition where the normal connection between the fetal bladder and the umbilical cord has remained open after the birth of the baby. Call your doctor if you notice these symptoms.
Conditions that require immediate emergency room evaluation include:• Any redness, warmth, swelling, or tenderness in the skin around the belly button, or “lots” of discharge from it, especially if the discharge smells bad. This could be omphalitis, which is a potentially life-threatening infection of the umbilical stump and the surrounding area. This condition requires prompt evaluation and treatment in the hospital.
Umbilical cord treatment after birth:
• During the first hour after delivery and usually following the baby’s first bath, the umbilical stump is treated with an antibiotic applied directly onto it, to decrease the chance for infection.• Twenty-four hours after delivery, the clamp can be removed from the stump. It is best to be sure this clamp is removed at the hospital before you take your baby home. If it is not removed at the hospital there is a chance the clamp can get stuck during home diaper changes and can pull on and injure the stump.
Umbilical cord treatment and self-care at home includes:• Little is required to care for the stump once you are home with the baby. Wipe the stump and the surrounding skin area with rubbing alcohol two to three times a day until the stump falls off. If you notice a small amount of yellowish ooze or even a drop of blood at this time, this is normal and no cause for concern.• Keep the area dry. This is very important and the reasons why you are not suppose to bathe the baby until later.• You can help with cord care by keeping the diaper rolled out and down (so the inside of the diaper is showing) to allow the stump to be exposed to the air keeping it dry. The rolled diaper will not trap the cord inside the diaper. If you roll the diaper in and down, it will place the plastic outer side of the diaper against the stomach and make the baby uncomfortable.• The cord usually falls off within the first 2 weeks. At this time, you might notice a small, pinkish area in the bottom of the belly button that will not look like the rest of the skin. This is normal and expected. Normal skin will grow over it. Once this occurs, it is safe to give your baby a bath.
There is no means of preventing granuloma, urachus and opmhalitis. Antibiotics can be given to prevent recurring bladder infections. The steps performed from moment the cord is cut with a sterile blade, to the antibiotic applied to prevent infection, to the need to keep the cord dry, are all precautions aimed at preventing the serious condition of omphalitis. If your baby develops any of the three conditions mentioned, once treated, all conditions have excellent outcomes.

Pregnant Mothers Taking Antidepressants May Risk Baby's Health

In recent years, women have been advised to avoid medications during pregnancy and while breastfeeding their infants; yet, at the same time, some conditions pregnant women suffer such as hypertension (high blood pressure), asthma, epilepsy and depression require long-term and continued medication management.
It appears as though pregnant women suffering from depression may be in a no-win situation because failure to manage depression with continued SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) medication may affect the health of both mother and child. SSRI's are designed to elevate the level of the neurotransmitter serotonin. A low level of serotonin is one of several neurochemical symptoms of depression. Low levels of serotonin can be caused by an anxiety disorder because serotonin is needed to metabolize stress hormones.
Persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN) has been found in infants of mothers taking Zoloft (generic sertraline) during pregnancy. Infants born with PPHN have difficulty making the transition from breathing inside the womb to normal breathing after deliver and often require a ventilator due to respiratory failure. Research has found that SSRI's accumulate in the adult's lungs and serotonin can cause the proliferation of certain muscle cells. This may possibly explain the drug's effect on the fetus. Approximately 10-20% of babies born with this condition do not survive.
SSRI's have also been known to cause withdrawal symptoms in those who abruptly stop taking the drugs. Stopping these drugs is something that must be carefully monitored by a physician, and generally, tapering off of the drugs is recommended. Abruptly stopping the drugs may cause the infant to experience withdrawals symptoms such as tremors, high-pitched crying, sleep disturbances, and gastrointestinal problems. A shocking 13% of 60 newborns exposed to SSRI's showed severe symptoms of withdrawal upon birth.
In February 2006, the New England Journal of Medicine published a study indicating that mothers taking SSRI antidepressants after the 20th week of pregnancy were six times more likely to give birth to an infant with a serious hearth defect than mothers not taking SSRI antidepressants.
Depression is a serious illness that often carries with it an increased risk of suicide in the sufferer and should be treated by your doctor. For decades, SSRIs have helped thousands of men and women fight depression. However, the statistics clearly show that there are serious risks involved with taking SSRI medication during pregnancy.
If you or a loved one has suffered adverse side effects in St. Louis or anywhere in Missouri or Illinois due to SSRI medication, please contact the experienced Drug Recall Lawyers at Brown & Brown Attorneys at Law.

The Ultimate Baby Health - Making Your Own Baby Food

The ingredients that go into baby foods are the basis of early, healthy development. Babies will grow up fast, and will require different kinds of foods with different textures etc. Little ones need to have calcium, protein, vitamins, fat, carbohydrates and plenty of iron in their diets for physical and mental growth.
Here is a basic timeline for developing a baby’s eating habits: The first six months or so you will want to breast feed if at all possible. If breastfeeding is not possible, consult your doctor about which formula might be best for your baby. After the first months try the baby out on soft, almost watery purees, such as runny yogurt. After seven months your baby can handle lumpy foods, with the mushy consistency of foods like rice pudding, mashed bananas etc. etc. Once the baby has become nine months old, you can feed him or her soft foods that are diced or shredded into very small pieces, such as Vienna sausages and cheese. Try to use the same types of foods that you are eating for that meal, if possible. You will continue this manner of feeding until the child is one year old. By their first birthday, babies should be adapted to family foods cut into very small pieces, as well as whole milk.
It doesn’t take much time to make baked potatoes and mash them to a pulp for the baby. And other kinds of fruits and veggies such as avocados, bananas and pears require hardly any prep work at all. Blenders and food processors, even manual potato mashers produce suitably runny purees with minimal effort, so you don’t have to worry about time. A great plus, considering the overall eating habits of Americans today, is that by making these mini-meals you're more likely to have fresh produce in the house.
A baby needs a lot of vitamins and iron. Vitamins promote growth and healing. Iron is important for babies between 6 months and 2 years because it aids mental and physical development. Vitamin C helps babies absorb iron, so try to mix iron-fortified cereals with foods high in vitamin C.
Some good foods for your baby include foods like apricots, avocados, broccoli, butternut squash, cantaloupe, cauliflower, nectarines, peaches, pumpkins, rice cereal, and sweet potatoes.
Certain foods to avoid include: Gluten, which is a type of protein found in barley, rye, wheat and some oats—avoid feeding these to your baby until he or she is six months old at least, high-fiber foods should also be avoided, honey (honey should not be given to your baby until he or she is at least a year old) According to the American Academy of Pediatrics. There is a connection between honey and infant botulism, which is a potentially fatal illness.
Also, you will want to avoid nuts (not only can there be an allergic reaction to nuts, but they can also be a choking hazard. It is recommended that you do not feed your child nuts until he or she is at least five years of age.) Salt is another bad thing for babies under the age of one to consume. (Salts can strain their immature kidneys, as well as can cause dehydration.) Sugars are a no-no too. Try to save sugary snacks or deserts for rare occasions, and unpasteurized cheeses (which can promote listeria infection).
Talk to your doctor for more advice on making baby foods.

Everything You Need To Know About Baby Swings

Baby swings have been life-savers for many parents who could not get their children to fall asleep except for the soothing back-and-forth movement provided by the swing. There are lots of variations on the baby swing concept, from simple swings that the parent pushes back and forth, to swings that can be cranked, and even electric swings.
Basics of Baby Swings
No matter how you swing it, the basic idea is the same for all baby swings. A small chair is held up by rods that connect it to the top of the baby swing. The entire apparatus is usually not more than a few feet tall, and is typically meant to be kept indoors. Unlike the outdoor swings you remember from childhood, these swings have a deliberately slow movement, and cannot move very far out.
Safety Concerns for Baby Swings
Baby swings are safe for babies nine months old or younger who weigh less than 25 pounds. Even newborns can benefit from a baby swing.
Unfortunately, in the US there are few safety standards for baby swings. Every year, about 1,000 babies in the US are taken to the emergency room for injuries received while using the baby’s swing. While this number is not huge, it is cause to be careful. In particular, you should never buy baby swings that have a carrier bed attachment that allows the baby to lie down in the swing. The child can slide to the edge of the carrier and suffocate.
With regular baby swings, the biggest danger is to the baby’s head. The baby’s head can get caught between the edge of the backrest and the bars used to hold the swing up. Another danger is that the child can fall out, especially if the back of the seat collapses. Of course, this is only a danger as long as no one is there to watch the child and put his or her head back where it should be.
That’s why it is especially important for parents to stay with any children who are in a baby swing, and not to leave them alone for a second. Baby swings are not mechanical babysitters. Children are not necessarily safer in them than they would be if left alone on the floor.
Even more so than with other devices for babies, you need to be extra careful to make sure baby swings are assembled correctly and are sturdy. Each time your baby is using the swing, you should take the opportunity to check that all the screws and other fasteners are tight, that the unit is well-balanced, and that the unit is generally in good shape.

When using baby swings, parents should be extra careful to make sure the baby’s head stays upright. With newborns, you may want to roll up a towel to use as a headrest.
Make sure that children in baby swings are securely buckled in with both a seat belt and a crotch strap. Some of the older swings don’t have the crotch strap; don’t use these swings or your baby might slide out or even be strangled.
Still, despite the safety concerns, you just might find yourself one restless night thanking whoever invented baby swings and the sleep they provide.

There is a cure for Crib death (sids). Must Read!

Something that a lot parents hate and cannot understand these days are diseases and disorders that the medical community claim that they cannot do anything about at this point in time. Parents become outraged when it happens to their child and the medical community says that there was nothing that they could have done to help or to prevent it from happening and this is the case with the occurrence we have come to call SIDS -- Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

The term itself is a misnomer: it is not a syndrome. It is the act of dying suddenly and inexplicably. In European countries, it is also called cot death, since it is most commonly associated with babies that die in their cribs. The health care system of the United States has said that there is no true explanation of why crib death occurs, but a man in New Zealand may have come up with an answer over a decade ago.

A man in New Zealand has begun a crusade against crib death and has pointed to a very likely explanation for it.Most flame retardant mattresses contain one of three chemicals: antimony, arsenic, or phosphorus. These chemicals are poisonous to us as human beings and you have to wonder why they are being put in our mattresses in the first place, much less in the mattress of an infant. We all know that babies will get their mattresses and bedding wet from spilling milk, juice, urinating through their diapers, and etcetera, but what happens when these spills do not get cleaned up properly?

Mold can grow in mattresses just as easily as carpet or on wet clothing, but the difference is that when mold begins to grow in a mattress made with these poisonous chemicals, they (like anything else on the planet that digests things) secrete gases. Since mold is consuming poisonous chemicals, is it not safe to say that these gases are also poisonous? An infant sleeping on its stomach and breathing in these gases would probably die, right?

It is a fact that less babies have died since the advice was given to sleep a child on his or her back instead of on their stomach. His advice says to not re-use an old baby mattress, but to buy a new one when you have another child because the instances of crib death have shown to increase with the more children you have. It is more common in children that are the 2nd, 3rd, and so on in their family.Special mattress wraps can also be purchased out of New Zealand for less than $50. The question of $50. Bucks or possible crib death. The choice is yours.

Dazzling Baby Shower Centerpiece Idea

One of the most important decorations you will have at your party is the baby shower centerpiece. This is what everyone will look for as soon as they walk in through the door.
There are a lot of fantastic ideas for centerpieces, but you should consider a few things before choosing exactly what kind of baby shower centerpiece idea is best.
What is the theme of the party? You will want to have your centerpiece directly relate to your theme. This will tie everything together, and make your baby shower space look really great.
For example, will you be having a sports related baby shower for a little future quarterback? Then your centerpiece needs to also be sports related. You wouldn't want to have a jungle baby shower theme with animals and the whole nine yards, and then choose a golf centerpiece. Stay with the same theme so your decorations won't clash.
Do you want your cake to be your shower centerpiece? Some women choose to just use the baby shower cake for the centerpiece.
If you will be doing this, there are a few things you can do to boost your baby shower centerpiece idea up just a bit. Place certain things around the cake, to dress it up.
For example, if the cake is a flat sheet cake, place it on a cake holder or pedestal to prop it up at a small angle. This will allow your guest to see your cake better. Then, dress up the area around it by placing a large vase of flowers on either side of the cake.
Try to choose beautiful flowers that match the colors on the cake. If the cake is a round tiered cake, just leave the cake the way it is, but you can still dress up the surrounding area.
If you would rather have a different baby shower centerpiece idea separate from your cake, there are a lot of things you can go with. A very cute idea is to choose a very large vase of flowers that match your theme, and place flower picks in the vase that coincide with your theme.
For example, if your theme is ‘Winnie the Pooh,' you can choose the flowers to match the colors of your decorations. Then look for ‘Winnie the Pooh' flower picks. If you can't find any, try to find some small ‘Winnie the Pooh' stuffed animals.
Take some barbecue skewers and tape them on the back of the stuffed animals. If you don't mind being merciless, just pop the skewers right through the cloth on the animals and place those in your flower vase.
Another really beautiful baby shower centerpiece idea is to go with the large vase of flowers. After you have arranged these, place smaller clear glass containers around the vase of flowers, and place floating candles in them.
Light the candles, making sure there is nothing close enough to them that would catch fire. The floating candles will create a pretty glow, and draw the guest's eyes toward the centerpiece. Use extreme caution if there will be children at the baby shower.
It isn't difficult to find a really great baby shower centerpiece idea, if you use your creativity and imagination. These tips and ideas should help you come up with something that will be a big hit at the baby shower and a favorite among the guests.

Baby Slings - Comfort for Both the Child and the Parent

Baby slings are one of those things that have been in existence for thousands of years but have only just recently made a comeback in modern society. It's hard to imagine how previous generations of mothers manage without something like baby sling carriers to help them carry their babies.

There are several advantages to using a sling to carry your baby in. First of all, baby is comforted by the presence of your body. This has both a calming influence and creates more of a bond between parent and child.Fathers can particularly take advantage of sling carriers. With these items hey get to participate more in the life of their new baby. When carrying a baby in a sling, you become closely attuned to her breathing rhythms and movements. This allows you to anticipate your child's needs more fully.

There is evidence that the babies cognitive abilities develop more rapidly when he is transported in a swing. One of the reasons for this could be the reduced stress because of the soothing effect of being close to the parent. Seen in this light a sling or carrier is a 2-way street where both parent and child will benefit.

Yet another big advantage of sling carriers is that they free your hands and allow you to do other household tasks while carrying your baby. You can look after older children and do household chores while the new baby is safely tucked into the sling. You can adjust the position of the sling to make both you and baby more comfortable.

Baby can be placed on the hip, the belly, or even on the back, but this requires some skill to get used to doing safely.Mothers can nurse their babies while they are in the sling, providing both privacy and mobility -- the sling can be adjusted so that baby can nurse on her own, leading Mom’s hands free to do other things.

Slings are most often used with newborns, but they can also be used for toddlers up to 35 pounds. Carrying around a big baby like this can be tiresome, though, and most parents opt for a stroller at that stage. Some parents may find that sling carriers are not as comfortable as other types of baby carriers. Parents with back problems in particular may find a sling to increase their back pain.

Potty Training Your Baby From Age 3 Weeks

A new mom will quickly learn when baby is telling her that he is tired or hungry. Baby will also tell you when he is about to soil his diaper - or 'eliminate' in the jargon. The signs are usually a grunting and moving into a certain position.

My son used to get this far away look on his face and he would be very noisy so that everyone around him knew what was on the way! Many moms in America are now practicing 'elimination communication' whereby they watch baby for signs that he is ready to 'eliminate' and then dangle him over the toilet or a potty.

The technique does require virtually constant observation of the baby but apparently baby soon learns the procedure and knows that if he grunts hard enough it saves him having to sit around with a diaper full of you-know-what!The savings achieved through having to buy far fewer diapers are considerable, and of course you would be doing your bit to help the environment.

Potty training at the 'traditional' age of around 2-3 can be a real battle and a scary time for a kid. Starting much earlier would spare you both but the technique does require constant attention and, for this reason, some experts 'pooh-pooh' the idea (sorry!) of starting potty training so early.

Heather Welford of the National Childbirth Trust believes most parents will be too busy to watch baby all day and says 'I think it will always be something practiced by a minority of parents doing it for ideological reasons such as being closer to the baby or to help save the environment'. Two good reasons I would have thought.

The Right Size for a Baby Blanket

Were you given a beautiful velour crib sized baby blanket at your shower? Did you try wrapping that tiny baby in the blanket, only to find you were cuddling lots of blanket and very little baby? Here are some tips to help you decide a good size blanket for the age of your baby.Usually, a crib blanket is about 36" x 52", and will cover a standard crib mattress.

While this blanket is wonderful for covering baby's crib, it's not quite as wonderful for baby. A crib blanket is just too big for swaddling a newborn. And we all know that a swaddled baby is a happier, more content baby. Many lightweight, cotton receiving blankets are about 30" square. They're inexpensive, and can found in almost any department store. While that size is great to place on the changing table to prevent any mishaps, it's not great for swaddling a newborn--it's just too small. A baby blanket that's about 34"-36" long in both directions, and is made of a light-to medium weight hypoallergenic fabric, like cotton or baby-weight fleece, is probably the best choice.

It's large enough to swaddle a newborn, and small enough for an older child to sleep with at night. An additional plus is that, if the fabric is lightweight enough, you can roll up the blanket and stow it in a diaper bag without too much trouble. So if your looking for a gift for that next baby shower, or want to give your sister a keepsake for her new baby, consider a personalized baby blanket, about 34" - 36", made out of a light or medium weight, hypoallergenic fabric. If you want to find a baby blanket for an older baby or young child, consider buying a larger, crib size blanket. If you or someone you know is a new mother for the first time, a package (or more) of cotton receiving blankets is a great choice.

Using Music To Calm Your Baby

Music is a wonderful way for you to calm and soothe your baby, especially during the first year. How many times have your heard parents say that there was nothing that they could do with their crying, fussing baby until they tried music.

This is because music does indeed soothe the savage beast, or in this case, the baby. There are certain distinct sounds that have been proven to calm even fussy babies: the sounds of nature, white noise, and music. Even if your baby isn’t fussing or crying you may want to use music as often as you can to encourage that feeling of calm and peacefulness.

All it takes is a few minutes every day and before you know it your baby will be looking forward to hearing that certain song emanating from the CD player. There is nothing complicated or mysterious about introducing your baby to music from day one. You don’t need to search for the perfect song or a certain type of music. All you have to do is start by having your baby listen to your favorite songs and music. If jazz is on the top of your list, let your baby listen to the sounds of John Coltrane as he sits in his baby seat watching you in the kitchen.

It doesn’t matter if you play the schmaltzy songs of the eighties or some wicked African beat, your baby is going to listen and his mood is going to be altered by any musical sound that he hears.Besides the music that you yourself can introduce your baby to, there are hundreds of CDs on the market today that are filled with baby songs and lullabies. At the end of the day you may want to play a CD of quiet baby songs that have a slower beat.

There are so many CDs for you to choose from that you will have a hard time making up your mind. Choose something that interests you. Many baby CDs will have lullabies and faster beat songs on the same CD.Playing music has other benefits besides soothing your fussy, crying baby. These benefits include:• Babies are introduced to musical sounds.• Music enhances your baby’s behavior and cognitive skills.• Relieves stress for the entire family.• Will stimulate curiosity and an interest in music.

Take time to find a variety of music CDs for your baby to listen to. You’ll soon notice which music your baby is most drawn to and can use that music when he is particularly fussy or is crying.

Facts about infant crying – the “healthy reasons”

Infant crying can be frustrating and frighteningly for parents. When you are unable to calm your baby, you forget that all babies cries, crying is the way babies communicate. An average infant cries an average 2-3 hours per day. As we all (hopefully) know, there are no such things as an average infant and parents have enough to cope with to use a stopwatch on their baby and calculate crying averages.
Therefore, what are the reasons for infant crying? Let us first look at the “healthy” reasons:
1. Hunger. Hunger is the most common reason for crying. Is it more than one hour since your baby ate? Is it more than 2 hours since you breastfed your baby? Hunger might be the reason for crying. An infant eats quite frequently, especially the first weeks after birth.
2. Wet diaper. Wet diapers are uncomfortable. Change the diaper and see if it helps.
3. Need of body contact. Maybe your infant wants you to hold it. Especially the first weeks after birth body contact are very important for the child. Besides, by picking the baby up when it is crying, you give an important signal: “I care about you”.
4. Gas pain. Gas pain is common after eating. Try to get your baby to burp. A good advice is to let the baby burp several times during eating in addition to a final burp after eating.
5. Too hot or cold. Infants cry if they feel too hot or too cold. Check if your infant is too hot or too cold and remove or add more clothes.
6. Boredom. Your infant cries if it is bored. Try to play with it, change its toys, put on some music, start singing or whatever you think will stimulate your child.
7. Stress. Your infant is stressed if you are stressed. An easy solution would be: do not stress but since we live in the real world: Try to stimulate the child.
8. Fussy environment. The best example of fuzzy environment is family gatherings where everybody wants to talk to the infant and everybody is talking at the same time. Hey, I want to scream at most family gatherings. Big changes in daily routines might also give the same symptoms. Solution: carry your infant ion your arms. I know: theory, theory… It is easy to get frustrated when your arms gets tired and you are unable to perform any other tasks than carry the baby.
The eight reasons listed above will very often result in eight different sound of crying. You will make your life much easier if you take the time to learn the differences. Other ways to calm down your baby are: give your baby a massage, give your baby a bath, rock your baby, play some calming music, let your baby listen to white noise… You can read more about this on our website.
In my next article, I will discuss the “unhealthy reason” for infant crying, until then: hang on out there...
Sincerely,
F.P. Larson

Facts about infant crying – time to worry

My previous article (Facts about infant crying – the “healthy reasons”) discussed the normal, not dangerous reasons for infant crying. However, as I stated crying for an infant is communication and your infant will communicate when there it is feeling pain, Note that I will not discuss colic in this article. Actually, you should forget about colic for a while since you might risk your infant’s health if you are ruling out all of the dangerous cases because you think your child has colic.
One important rule: do not act as a pediatrician on your own. Do not determine your child’s diagnose yourself. You are gambling with your child’s health if you are giving diagnoses. Please contact a professional (a physician or other another health provider) if your child has abnormal crying.
So, let us look into some of the reasons for abnormal crying in infants. Note that there might be several reasons that are not mention in this article (I cannot repeat this enough times: contact professional health personnel).
1. Ear infection or ear pain. Usually your child will have fever and diarrhea and/or reflux. You might notice that your infant is trying to pull its ear.
2. Sore Throat. Especially for very young infants, it might be difficult for parents to understand that the child is crying due to sore throat. You will most likely recognize a standard cold (symptoms like for adults) but other reasons for sore throat might be difficult to recognize. However, look for signs like fever, vomiting and poor appetite.
3. Eye infection. Eye infections are quite common for newborns. Look for signs in your child’s eyes (swollen eyes, watering eyes or pus formed from eyes).
The reasons above are the most common, and least dangerous, reasons to contact health personnel. However, an infant can have many other diseases, like heart problems, allergy, asthma, etc. Please contact professional health personnel if your baby is acting abnormal. As I said earlier in this article, some things cannot be repeated or emphases enough times. Here is my conclusion for you:
Contact a doctor if
* ...your infant is in pain
* ...your infant has breathing problems
* ...your infant has fever
* ...your infant is vomiting
* ...your infant has diarrhea
* ...your infant has bad appetite
* ...your infant has rashes
* ...you suspect that there is something wrong with your infant
If there is nothing wrong with your child and your doctor has a bad attitude because of your “false alarm”: change doctor. You are allowed to be concerned by your child health. You are obligated to contact professionals if you are afraid that your child is in danger. You are allowed to be wrong. Do not let is stop you from contacting health personnel next time if you were wrong the first time. Your child needs your concern.
Sincerely,
F.P. Larson

A baby’s infant Halloween costume!

Are you thinking about a cute infant Halloween costume? The innocence and wonder of childhood are too brief. Infancy lasts but one year. So the opportunity to celebrate Halloween as an infant with your young one wearing an infant Halloween costume comes but once. So wouldn’t you want the apple of your eye to partake in the Halloween Night festivities too? Halloween cynics amongst us may feel that it's a bit like walking past a graveyard and detecting among the tombstones a thoroughly raucous party in progress—a bizarre mixture of horrible screams and merriment. Scary things suddenly are embraced wholeheartedly, brought to front porches and displayed. And infants, those innocents whom we most want to protect from death and danger, are an integral part of the annual ritual. Yeah, they can’t take to the streets trick-or-treating, but they needn’t miss out on the fun – thanks to infant Halloween costumes!

Come take your pick from the Halloween BOO-tique for an infant Halloween costume.

Back in the old days people came up with costumes simply by hunting around the house and seeing what they could turn into a costume! In today’s high-tech Halloween age, that would, of course, be unthinkable! Today we could choose from a vast range of baby infant Halloween costumes and infant toddler Halloween costumes - Animal Costumes, Classic Halloween Costumes, Vegetable Costumes, Bug Costumes, Tom Arma Costumes, Career Costumes, Food Costumes, Disney Costumes, TV Character Costumes, Character Costumes, Renaissance Costumes, Flower Costumes, Angel Costumes, Christmas Costumes……the list is endless!
